The Nursing and Midwifery Council

The UKCC no longer existed after April 2002 when its functions were taken over by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. In 2000 the Agenda for Change smoothed the way for a new pay structures for qualified nurses. Because of this and the Health Reforms and regulatory changes, nursing numbers hit an all-time high in 2005 with 397,500 nurses employed in the U.K.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council established and improved nursing and midwifery standards to protect and serve the public with better care. It maintained a register that listed all midwives and nurses in the U.K. They also set the guidelines and standards for midwifery and nursing conduct, ethics and performance. They also establish the professional standards and provide advice for all registrants. Perhaps most importantly, the Nursing and Midwifery Council establishes and monitors the quality assurance of midwifery and nursing education. They set the guidelines and provide the standards for local supervisory authorities for midwives.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council also considers all allegations of nursing and midwifery misconduct. They look into all reports of lack of competence and unfitness to practice due to ill health.

The council consists of twelve members, twelve alternate members and eleven lay members. The twelve registrant members are made up of three nurses, three midwives and three specialist community public health nurses. The lay members are made up of people from employment, consumer and education groups who have been appointed by the Privy Council.

Because of the standardization of nursing training, Nursing Jobs are available in every field of medicine. There are jobs available in every medical discipline including Radiography Jobs, cardiac physiology jobs and Occupational Therapy Jobs to name a few.
